A soldier gets full experience for each kill they score and 1/4th experience for a kill someone else in the squad scores. To replace soldiers you can recruit rookies from the Armory in the Avenger, or you can purchase pre-leveled soldiers from the resistance HQ or Black Market (These are expensive), or occasionally you're awarded pre-leveled from missions, and finally you can sometimes get a scanning target that awards 2-3 rookies for a few days scanning time.Īnd yeah, you need to rotate people out and pay attention to who's scoring kills. In either case that's not a scenario you want to be in. If you have the Shen's Last Gift DLC, you can always field wounded SPARK units. If you have no choice or are on one of a few special missions, you can use wounded soldiers. Your first playthru will probably end in failure and that's ok, especially if you try a high difficulty or play Ironman. Like BYan said its best to just treat the game as a rogue-like and don't get too invested in your soldiers or pay that much attention to the avatar project. Always use cover, flashbangs are great early on and battle scanners are nice too. Dashing rarely ends well on higher difficulties. Most important thing is to get satellites and the squad size upgrades as soon as you can. Rotate people around, treat them as expendable.
Some general tips - don't just take the same guys on missions. The early to mid game transition is the only spot I can see that happening (and it would need to be on a high difficulty), it gets a bit awkward if you haven't tech'd right. I guess its possible but between the recruits you get from scanning, the HQ and the armory it would be pretty difficult unless you had a major string of bad luck. Can you end up in a position where you don't have any soldiers to take on a mission, or does the game feed you new ones you can rank up? How does that work? I feel like part of the reason I quit Enemy Unknown was because I didn't really understand how it worked, I kept taking the same 4 soldiers on missions so when they got wounded, my remaining soldiers were crap I'm kind of unclear on what happens if you have too many or all your soldiers dead or "gravely wounded".
